Protecting GelSight Mini Surface

Hello,
I’m using a GelSight Mini for a cable exploration task that involves sliding over the cable. After some trials, the gel surface got stretched and partially torn — probably due to friction or sharp edges.
Does anyone have suggestions for protecting the gel during sliding? Maybe a thin film, membrane, or fabric layer that doesn’t mess up the tactile image too much?
Appreciate any tips!
Thanks,
Malik
